Dean Christian Prepares to Conclude his Ministry · Le doyen Christian se prépare à conclure son ministère

Dear friends,

One year ago, the Very Rev. Christian Schreiner announced that after nearly two decades as Dean and Rector, he had discerned a call to live out his vocation in a new way. Since then, his path of discernment has become steadily clearer, and Christian has been diligently working toward accreditation to provide spiritual accompaniment within Quebec’s public healthcare system, as an intervenant en soins spirituels.

That process will conclude soon, and Christian, the churchwardens, and I have agreed that his ministry as Dean of Quebec and Rector of the Parish of Quebec will conclude on April 30. His final service at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity will be on Sunday, April 26. I know we will find ways between now and then to express our gratitude for his 20 years of ministry, not only at the cathedral, but in the wider Deanery of Quebec and in the diocese.

While Christian will be laying down his charge as Dean and Rector, he and his family will be remaining in Quebec City, and his hope and mine is that he will still find ways to share his gifts of ministry with the Anglican community of which he remains a part, even as he pursues his new vocation in public healthcare.

Christian’s departure as Dean and Rector becomes part of the wider process of discernment and transition that has already been underway in the Deanery of Quebec for some time. This includes a deanery-wide consultation last October in which many of you participated. A report including recommendations for a path forward for Anglican ministry in the Quebec City region, based in part on feedback received at that consultation, will be available by the end of May. It will lay out a future course for Anglican ministry not only at the cathedral, but in the wider Quebec City region. Therefore there will be no immediate search for someone to succeed Christian as Dean and Rector.

In the meantime, the Rural Dean of Quebec, the Rev. Canon Jeffrey Metcalfe, will work with the other members of the Deanery Ministry Committee and the churchwardens to ensure that Sunday services are provided at the cathedral and that pastoral care is available during this time of transition. Until a new Rector or Incumbent is appointed in any vacant parish, the canons of the diocese stipulate that the Bishop assumes that role, and so I will function in that capacity for the Parish of Quebec as of May 1. I plan to be present for the parish’s upcoming annual vestry meeting on April 12 to further discuss next steps and receive your questions.

I invite your prayers for Christian as his ministry with and among us as Dean and Rector draws to a close, and for the cathedral and wider Anglican community in the Quebec City region, as we together discern where God is leading us, and for the faith, hope, and courage to follow.

Ecumenical Walk with the Cross: Moved Indoors · Marche œcuménique avec la Croix : déplacée à l'intérieur

Due to the freezing rain forecast for Friday, this year's Ecumenical Walk with the Cross will take place entirely indoors at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 31 rue des Jardins, beginning at 6:30pm. All are welcome to join us for this moment of shared prayer and reflection.

All are invited to join us for the 5:45am Sunrise Easter Vigil at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 31 rue des Jardins, and to stay afterwards for a potluck breakfast. Contributions of food to share are welcome!

Easter Party · Fête de Pâques

We are having an Easter Party after the 11:00am combined regional bilingual Eucharist at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 31 rue des Jardins. There will be no separate service at St. Michael's, Sillery. Please bring finger food to share. We are also looking for volunteers to help receive and organize the food tables as people arrive before the service. We have refrigerators available for items that need to be kept cold.

If you will be at the service and are willing to help, please let us know!

Nous organisons une fête de Pâques après l'Eucharistie bilingue régionale combinée de 11h à la Cathédrale Holy Trinity, 31 rue des Jardins. Il n'y aura pas de service séparé à St. Michael's, Sillery. Veuillez apporter de la nourriture à manger avec les doigts (finger food) à partager. Nous cherchons également des bénévoles pour aider à recevoir et organiser les tables de nourriture à l'arrivée des gens avant le service.
